Tell me-are you nervous?
As you're undoubtedly aware, we here at Resonator are always wary of deafening hype. That's why it was awesome to be introduced to such a straight-up GOOD band as Rock Kills Kid at the show they played with She Wants Revenge in Atlanta last month. However, after seeing them play a headlining show last night at Vinyl for another one of local radio station 99x's 99 cent shows (which is how we got introduced to The Swear and pleasently surprised by The Subways), I have to retract a few things I've said previously. Meaning the trite and cliched U2/Coldplay comparisons I made (and meant them positively-I said Coldplay WISHED they could be Rock Kills Kid).

Their songs spring forth with a nervous tension that would make one think lead singer/songwriter Jeff Tucker had spent some time with Nicola Kuperus, and actually getting to play for a full hour, they threw in a mother fucking ROCKING cover of "lips like sugar".

We also got the chance to drink and talk quite a bit with two OTHER people who share my name, neither of whom spell it the same, though. Shawn Dailey (not ATMOSPHERE, though that would be cool), on bass (and fucking awesomely funny guy who shares some of our views on, oh, certain things) and Sean Stopnik on guitar took some time out from, well, being fucking ROCK to sit down and chat. The rest of the band wandered in and out, but the three of us, Shawn Sean and Shaun, managed to get in a damn good q and a session before dispersing to chase drinks and disrupt things.

I really don't know what to say other than these guys are the real deal. They have a sound that doesn't rip off anyone as much as take a mesh of influences (YES, there's some U2, no, I wasn't accurate in the Coldplay, and I shouldn't throw around naughty words like that) and string them together to create a sound that's Talking Heads jerky with heavy paranoia and emotive anthems, all at once.

Rock Kills Kid: Paralyzed

The first single from their forthcoming "Are You Nervous" album, which drops in May-it's a good representation of their overall sound, and catchy as hell.

Rock Kills Kid: Nervous

MY personal favorite from the album, and from their live show. It's a simple song with a really mother fucking darkly sarcastic, self-effacing slant:

Now that you know
it's all your fault
what are you doing with it?
Hey, are you nervous?...

It's ominously haunting, that one.

We have more on Rock Kills Kid coming, just wanted to make sure you had the heads up-see them NOW, before they are headlining stadiums and telling the Edge to "play the blues".

I have this feeling that I should have been paying attention to this community for, oh, quite a while now. (I can't remember if there's an actual, oh-god-I-know-one-of-you-don't-I reason for that or if it's just that you clearly win at everything. Let me know.)

Because, anyway, seriously, those are two excellent songs up there. Thank you. I add Rock Kills Kid to my List Of Reasons Why Music In 2006 Does Not Suck, Damn You. Hurray.

it's really funny that they did a cover of lips like sugar. when i saw them with swr, i said to my friend that they should play an echo and the bunnymen cover haha.

i will admit that their sound is refreshing. i look forward to the album. i'll probably spin it a few times on my radio show even.
